Presenting the Absent
Mixed media installation
Variable dimension
2016
The installation is exploring the manipulation of memories.
In a crude way, the work reconstructs a corner of the bedroom of my partner at that time where I have actually stayed for accommodation during a trip to Melbourne in 2015.
As he and I was in a long-distance relationship for a few years, Skype was the only way for us to keep closer contact. For this work, I asked him to place his laptop camera around his room at different angles for me to take screenshots as to recreate images I had in memories during the trip. I then transformed the digital images into positive films by taking pictures from projections of the screenshots using a 135 film camera.
On the other hand, I faked some detail images on the crudely reconstructed space, which were also captured and processed as positive films and projected together with those images sourced from Skype video calls.
All the films are a collection of images from the original place and the fake space. However, none of them are the "authentic" images of memories that should have been taken from that trip.
The action of reconstructing memories became fictionalising reality.
